On June 22, the Eclipse Foundation, best known for its Java IDE, released its annual train of open source projects, codenamed Neon for 2016. This year’s set of 84 projects included 69 million lines of code written by 779 developers.

Key new updates in the Neon release include better JavaScript tooling, improved performance for PHP tools, enhancements for Java developers, better support for Docker, automated error reporting and a new Eclipse User storage Service (USS). “Neon noticeably returns focus to essential coding improvements, like editor auto-save, HiDPI support, better dark theme and more intelligent Java Content Assist,” said Todd Williams, vice president of Technology at Genuitec, a founding member of the Eclipse Foundation. “These changes, along with Neon’s increased responsiveness, will help ensure that Eclipse remains competitive in its core market segments.”

The Oxygen release train is slated for release in June 2017.
