Disney has unveiled a new open source program complete with a GitHub page featuring some of its computer animation projects. Those projects include the following:

  • Universal Scene Description: “The first publicly available software that addresses the need to robustly and scalable interchange and augment arbitrary 3D scenes that may be composed from many elemental assets”
  • OpenSubdiv: An API for high-performance subdivision surface evaluation
  • OpenEXT: A file format useful for computer imaging

Several of Disney’s open source tools were first created by developers at Pixar.
