Developer Survey Holds Bad News for Facebook, HTML5

Appcelerator has released the results of a new developer survey conducted by IDC. Among the more interesting findings was the fact that 66 percent of those surveyed believe a social networking startup that focused on mobile could overcome Facebook's dominance.

The survey also found the mobile development industry falling out of love with HTML5. Developers were "neutral" or "disappointed" with the platform's monetization capabilities (83.4 percent), security features (81.8 percent), fragmentation (75.4 percent), poor performance (72.4 percent), timeliness of updates (67.9 percent), user experience (62 percent) and distribution control (60.3 percent).

Other key findings include the following:

  • 85 percent of mobile developers were very interested in developing for iPhone.
  • 83 percent of mobile developers were very interested in developing for iPad.
  • 66 percent of mobile developers were very interested in developing for Android.
  • Only 9 percent of mobile developers were very interested in developing BlackBerry apps.
