Computer Science Enrollment Surges Nearly 30%

According to the Computing Research Association (CRA), undergraduate enrollment in computer science programs at U.S. universities increased 29 percent. The CRA calls that surge "astonishing." The organizations notes that this was the fifth year in a row that an increasing number of students have signed up to major in computer science. And it's the third year in a row that the growth has been in the double digits.

Although it is still very low, the percentage of women studying computer science did grow slightly, from 11.7 percent in the 2010-11 school year to 12.9 percent for 2011-12, according to the report. However, the number of female students graduating with a computer science degree fell from 11.8 percent to 10.6 percent.
