Last month, Java claimed the top place on Tiobe’s popularity index for programming languages, but this time, C is back in the top spot. Tiobe noted that the change is partially due to a change in the way it calculates the rankings. The new method meant drops in popularity for Ruby, which dropped from tenth on the list to thirteenth, and Perl, which fell from eleventh to twelfth.

Meanwhile, Transact-SQL made the top ten for the first time, jumping up from twelfth to tenth. And Cobol and R also made big gains. “New in the top 20 are R and Cobol,” said Tiobe’s Paul Jansen. “This is not really a surprise. R is the number-one statistical programming language at the moment, and Cobol still claims to have most lines of code written in it in existing commercial production systems.”

The top ten on the list were C, Java, C++, Objective-C, PHP, C#, (Visual) Basic, Python, JavaScript and Transact-SQL, in that order.
