The folks at Willow Garage, Inc. now have a program to open their personal robot technology to open source developers who want to help make robots better and cheaper.

The cost of a Willow Garage PR2 robot is $400,000, but if you’re an open source developer, or company, you can apply to get one for $280,000. The goal of this program is to get more software and hardware modules built for the PR2 so that the price can come down to a level that’s affordable to the average person.

The PR2 comes with a mobile base, two arms for manipulation, a suite of sensors and two computers, each with eight processing cores, 25 gigabytes of RAM and two terabytes of hard disk.

And as the Willow Garage developers demonstrate in their video, you can program the robot to bring you beer.
