Linux to Dominate Mobile Market by 2015

According to a new report by ABI Research, 62 percent of non-smartphone mobile devices will be running Linux by 2015.

The research firm based its prediction largely on the growing momentum of Linux-based mobile phone currently in the marketplace, InformationWeek's W. David Gardner reported.

"The number of Linux-oriented initiatives recently seen in the mobile industry indicates that Linux will be a key technology in the next generation of netbooks, media tablets, and other mobile devices," said senior analyst Victoria Fodale in a statement.

Google's Android and Chrome OS, along with MeeGo and Palm's webOS are all based on the open source Linux kernel.

ABI Research also produced a report on smartphones too, Gardner said.
