Android's Fragmentation Problem

Google has released six major releases for the open source Android mobile operating system in just 18 months. The bulk of new phones are running version 2.1, however, more than 50 percent of users are still running Android 1.5 and 1.6.

This is according to Google's own data, ZDNet's Adrian Kingsley-Hughes reported today.

But Android's rapid development is going to slow down now, to help give developers a chance to write code rather than chasing Android releases.

Google's Andy Rubin said that updates to Android will occur twice a year and eventually only once a year.

"As Android becomes more mainstream, the platform will have to offer owners, developers and OEMs more certainty - something that geeks won’t be happy with," Kingsley-Hughes said.
