Apple recently changed its iPhone software developer kit when the company rolled out the iPhone 4.0 operating system. With that update, Apple decided that they will no longer allow third-party applications in the iTunes, iPhone or the iPad store.

Now the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice are deciding whether an antitrust investigation is warranted.

Apple’s move to block third-party applications is yet another shot across the bow of Adobe Systems and particularly Flash applications.

The New York Times reported, “The sudden changes to Apple’s rules came just days before Adobe was set to showcase its newest software update to its Flash authoring tools. On Monday, The New York Post reported that “a person familiar with the matter,” said the two agencies “are days away from make a decision” over which one would investigate.
