Sony Slapped with Class Action Lawsuit for Blocking Linux on PS3

On Tuesday, Anthony Ventura filed a lawsuit in the United States District Court Northern District of California accusing Sony of breach of contract when the company blocked the installation of Linux on the PS3 gaming console.

Sony updated the PS3 firmware on April 1, making it impossible for users to install the open source Linux operating system.

"Ventura states that the ability to install Linux on the PS3 was the reason he chose to buy the product," The H Open Source reported. "He was prepared to pay a significantly higher price for it than for competitor products from Nintendo or Microsoft because of the additional functionality. The court papers state that by advertising the ability to install Linux and then disabling this option, Sony obtained an unfair competitive advantage."

Ventura alleges that by removing the advertised functionality, Sony has violated California's Consumer Legal Remedies Act.
