The New York Times has been releasing some interesting open source code with little fanfare for awhile now. The latest soon-to-be-released open source project is its Doc Viewer 2.0.

The most interesting new feature is called annotations.

“As a college student,” New York Times Interface Engineer Alan McLean wrote, “I always experienced a certain thrill when I discovered notes scrawled alongside the text in the margins of library textbooks. With the document viewer we wanted to transfer this kind of experience online and expose the journalistic layer in a more refined way.”

Now reporters can highlight regions of the document they deem important and readers can switch to an “annotation” view dedicated to the reporter’s notes on a story.

Doc Viewer 2.0 is built with jQuery and performance is improved using the Jammit asset packager.

“This is the version of document viewer,” McLean said, “we will be releasing as open source software in the very, very near future.”
