Comcast and Internet Systems Consortium announced today the release of their Address Family Transition Router open source software.

The “software is part of a technology that could enable users to access IPv4 content from their legacy IPv4 devices and applications over an IPv6 network,” the press release said.

According to the American Registry of Internet Numbers, IPv4 addresses will be exhausted sometime in 2011 or 2012.

The Address Family Transition Router enables users to access IPv4 content from their legacy IPv4 devices and applications over an IPv6 network.
