IBM Lands $74.4 Million Open Source Government Contract

The US General Services Administration awarded IBM a $74.4 million services contract to modernize key components of the agency using open source software.

"Company officials said that the project will include the integration of nine key GSA applications into a single system - based on open source software - designed to simplify the entire acquisition and procurement process," Anil Sharma of TMCnet reported today.

When the project is complete, GSA hopes to provide a one-stop shop where federal agencies and suppliers can access information about approved products, services and GSA contracts, according to Sharma.

There's no word on which open source projects will be used, but the benefits to the projects could be substantial.
