All trends are showing that PHP and Python are rapidly taking over jobs once performed by Java and .Net in enterprise IT.

“Forrester recently reported that PHP claims the highest instance of open source use within enterprises, at 57 percent penetration,” Matt Asay blogged yesterday.

The bulk of enterprise software spending is still going into Java and .Net-based software Asay said.

“While dynamic programming languages like PHP and Python dominate Web engineering,” Matt Asay wrote, “the signs that they are breaking Java and .Net’s hold on the enterprise are less clear.”

Comparing licensing costs of .Net-based software with the cost of PHP or Python, which are free, might not be the best metric to use.

“As Indeed.com’s analysis of hiring trends suggests,” Asay said, “there are still plenty of jobs in established programming languages like Java and .Net, but there’s a boom in PHP and Python jobs, in particular.”

From July 2005 to July 2009, there’s been a greater than 350 percent increase in Python jobs and nearly 250 percent increase in PHP jobs.

For .Net or Java, the increase in jobs was minimal and actually is trending downward. Perl jobs have been flat too.
