Mobile phone manufacturing are flocking to open source software like the sparrows of Capastrano.

According to Tim Yeaton at LinuxInsider, “Were it not for the availability of OSS, the fast turnaround for smartphone manufacturers might not be possible, which could explain why the mobile industry has been one of the most aggressive in terms of adopting open source and is a model for the rest of the software-enabled world.”

Andriod, Symbian, LiMo and even Apple’s iPhone takes advantage of open source software.

Open source is about turnaround and getting your software going quickly and out to market.

“In today’s software development environment,” reports Yeaton, “it is a rare programmer who starts a project entirely from scratch. Forty percent of open source software is used as building blocks for larger applications, and 60 percent is used to replace commercial software, a recent Gartner survey shows.”
