Linux Gains Market Share as Windows and Mac OS X Drop
Linux grabbed a slightly larger sliver of the operating system market share in December 2009, according to the research firm Net Applications.
While gauging the actual use of the free and open source operating system is difficult, LinuxInsider Katherine Noyes reported that the Net Applications Market Share report shows that Linux was running on 1.02 percent of computers in December, up from 1 percent in November.
Noyes said that Windows fell from 92.52 percent in November to 92.21 percent in December, and Mac fell from 5.12 percent to 5.11 percent.
Stephen O'Grady, an analyst with RedMonk, told LinuxInsider that because the changes in market share were so tiny, it's difficult to interpret their meaning.
"It's likely just noise, statistically speaking," O'Grady said.
