Open Source Software Helps Haiti

According to ZDNet's Dan Blankenhorn, one bright light in the misery has been the successful implementation in OpenMRS by Partners in Health.

Partners in Health has been working in Haiti for 20 years. The organization has learned a lot about how to implement IT solutions in a country lacking infrastructure.

"For the last two weeks," Blankenhorn writes that Partners in Health "has been orchestrating medical response to the earthquake, and has drawn great praise. But what makes it possible is a Web-based medical record, originally created to track programs against drug-resistant TB."

And as the developers of OpenMRS and Partners in Health learn lessons from the recent earthquake, the improvements will go back into OpenMRS so that next crisis will be a bit easier than the last one.
