Oracle Makes 5-year Commitment to MySQL

Oracle told MySQL customers, developers and the European Commission that there’s nothing to worry about.

In a press release today Oracle lists 10 commitments regarding the future of MySQL, if the European Commission gives Oracle the green light to purchase Sun Microsystems and the popular open source database server.

But after the ten things not to worry about, the statement reads: “The geographic scope of these commitments shall be worldwide and these commitments shall continue until the fifth anniversary of the closing of the transaction.”

So if the purchase of Sun is approved, Oracle said that for the next five years, they will fund research and development, continue releasing MySQL under the GNU Public License, setup a MySQL customer advisory board and they will continue to make available the MySQL storage engine APIs.
