Windows 7 users have been tinkering with Chrome for more than a year. On Tuesday, Google released beta versions of the browser for Mac and Linux.

According to Google Product Manager Brian Rakowski, the Mac port took longer than expected. The browser’s Mac-specific code consists of 73,804 lines and it took 29 developer builds to get the beta right. And that’s without several core features.

“This first beta release for Mac does not yet incorporate extensions, bookmark sync, bookmark manager, and cookie manager,” blogs Google Chrome Software Engineers John Grabowski and Mike Pinkerton.

But the Linux version, that “was a labor of love.” According to a blog post by Software Engineers Dan Kegel and Evan Martin, Chrome for Linux was “developed as a true open source project, using public mailing lists, IRC channels, bug tracker, code repository, and continuous build and test farm.”
