Jaspersoft CEO Urges European Union to Approve Oracle/Sun Acquisition Before January
Jaspersoft Chief Executive Officer Brian Gentile sent a letter to the European Union yesterday urging the governing body to approve the Oracle deal to purchase Sun Microsystems.
The European Commission is holding up the merger because of concerns about competition in the database market. Sun owns the popular open source database MySQL. However, proponents of the merger argue that those fears are unfounded.
"With the proliferation of open source software over the last decade," Gentile writes to the EU that, "lower barriers to entry have naturally increased healthy competition in the enterprise software market. As a result, the software and technology market has grown far too dynamic to allow one acquisition to stifle competition."
The EU is expected to rule on whether to allow Oracle's acquisition of Sun on Jan. 27. Gentile said the "government should step aside and let the market move on."
