Apple Sold 13 Million New iPhones During Opening Weekend
Apple has announced that it sold 13 million new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus models during the first weekend of availability. The devices, which went on sale Sept. 25, were snapped up at a rate of 50 every second. It was a new record for Apple, which sold 10 million devices last year during the first weekend of availability for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
Part of the reason for the surge in sales may be the fact that the smartphones were available in China on day one, a first for Apple. The company plans to begin selling the new models in 40 more countries on Oct. 9, expanding to 130 countries before the end of the year.
In the past, the launch of a new iPhone has coordinated with a surge in app downloads for the mobile development industry, but those figures are not yet available.
