A new report from App Annie finds that in the first quarter of 2015 Apple’s App Store had about 70 percent more revenue than Google Play. That’s an increase from the 60 percent revenue gap App Annie reported in the third quarter of 2014. The report says that the sudden surge in iPhone sales in China following the release of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus is likely responsible for the surge in app revenue.
The report also provided some guidance on which countries mobile development might want to target with their apps. It found stark differences among which countries had the highest revenue and downloads for iOS and Android:
- The top five countries for iOS downloads were China, the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom and Russia, in that order.
- The top five countries for Android downloads were the United States, Brazil, India, Russia and Mexico.
- The top five countries for iOS revenue were the United States, Japan, China, the United Kingdom and Australia.
- The top five countries for Android revenue were Japan, the United States, South Korea, Germany and Taiwan.
