The leadership behind the open source Groovy programming language has announced that the project’s new sponsor will be the Apache Software Foundation. In the past, Pivotal has supported Groovy, but in January, the company announced that it would stop funding Groovy and Grails, a related Web application framework, at the end of this month.

Project lead Guillaume Laforge said the group considered several open source foundations but selected Apache because it was “closest to our philosophy.” He added, “We wanted to send a clear message to the community and to our user base that Groovy is here for the long run.”

According to Laforge, Groovy was downloaded more than four million times last year.
